Rising from the sands of Normandy’s coast, Mont Saint-Michel is one of France’s most iconic sights — a medieval abbey perched on a rocky island, encircled by some of the most dramatic tides in Europe. Its story spans over 1,300 years, blending faith, fortification, and folklore.

From Vision to Monastery — Legend says that in 708 AD, Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, instructing him to build a church on the rocky islet. After a few divine nudges (including one said to have burned a hole in Aubert’s skull), construction began.
A Monastic Powerhouse — By 966, Benedictine monks had settled here, building a grand Romanesque abbey that soon became a major pilgrimage site.
Gothic Glory & Fortifications — In the 13th century, Gothic elegance transformed the abbey, while the Hundred Years’ War turned the mount into an impregnable fortress — never once taken by the English.
Decline & Prison Years — The abbey’s religious role waned in the 17th century, and after the French Revolution it became a prison until 1863.
Restoration & Tourism — Declared a historic monument in 1874, it was painstakingly restored. A modern bridge completed in 2015 returned the mount to its tidal island state.
Disappearing Island: At high tide it’s cut off by water, at low tide surrounded by vast sands — tides can rise “as fast as a galloping horse.”
Saint Aubert’s Skull: Preserved in Avranches with a hole said to be Archangel Michael’s finger mark.
Haunted Past: Some say the spirits of its prison years still linger in the dungeons.
Hidden Symbols: Alchemical carvings dot the abbey’s stonework, adding to its mystery.
Lost Library: Once home to priceless manuscripts — most vanished during the Revolution.
Must-Try: The famous Omelette de la Mère Poulard, whipped and cooked over open fire.
Seafood: Fresh mussels, salt-meadow lamb (agneau de pré-salé), galettes, and Breton cider.
Sweet Treats: Butter biscuits and salted caramel for the road home.
