We’re less than three hours (240 km) from Paris, making it easy to combine a city break with a relaxing countryside escape. The Mayenne region sits at the crossroads of Brittany and Normandy, with the vineyards of the Loire Valley just to the south. Thanks to our proximity to both the Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, the climate is mild, with pleasant summers and comfortable year-round temperatures.
A car is essential for making the most of your stay. Most of our guests arrive via the Cross-Channel ferry ports of:
Caen – around 2 hours’ drive
Saint-Malo – around 2 hours’ drive
Cherbourg – around 3 hours’ drive
If you prefer to travel via Calais ferry port or the Eurotunnel, the drive is around 5 hours, mostly on easy flowing Autoroutes and then quiet and scenic French roads.
By train: The TGV from Paris to Laval takes as little as 1 hour 15 minutes, with car hire available at the station.
By air: Airports at Rennes (90 minutes away) and Nantes (2.5 hours) offer regular flights from the UK and other European destinations.
By motorhome: France is motorhome-friendly, with excellent service areas along the route.
Avoid peak times for smoother driving on ferry departure and arrival days.
Stock up on snacks for the drive — French service stations often have picnic areas, and you’ll find bakeries en route.
Sat nav & maps: While GPS is useful, having a paper map can help you discover scenic backroads.
Tolls: Many major routes are toll roads (“péage”). Have a credit card or some euro coins ready.
Local driving: Roads are generally quiet, but take care on narrow country lanes — you may meet tractors or cyclists!
At Mayenne Holidays, we welcome your four-legged companions to our two gîtes in Hercé (Maison Sauvignon & Merlot) with the same warmth as our human guests. Our pet-friendly gîtes with secure fenced gardens together with travel advice ensure your journey is as smooth as your stay is comfortable.
